Born on September 25, 1968, Gaurav Ghei started playing golf at a very early age. He mastered the game and started playing it professionally from the year 1991. A promising name in Indian golf, Ghei as an amateur won the East India Amateur, West India Amateur and the North India Amateur. He was the proud winner of the Desaru classic in 1994. Thereafter, there was no looking back for this ace player. Ghei's historic win at the $500,000 Gadgil Western Masters in November 1995, catapulted him to national fame. In 1996, Ghei made international headlines, when he defeated Ryder Cup veteran, Colin Montgomerie, in the 16-nation Alfred Dunhill Cup, at St Andrews, as India stunned not only the hosts, but also the strong favorites, Scotland. In June 1997, Ghei, who was set on a roll, created yet another history by becoming the first Indian to qualify for the prestigious British Open, through the tough Sectional Qualifying event and played at the Royal Troon.
