The 1971 series victory of India in West Indies heralded the start of a
glorious chapter in the history of Indian cricket. By taming the mighty
West Indians in their own den, India announced their arrival in the big
stage. It was the first Indian away series victory. The successful
series also saw the emergence of "Little Master" Sunil
Gavaskar.
India's decisive success in the series was achieved in the second match
in Port of Spain where the tourists came out on top by seven wickets. On
the first day itself, West Indies found themselves on the back foot when
they could manage a measly 214 in the first innings. A masterly 112 by
Dilip Sardesai and a patient 65 by Gavaskar in his maiden Test innings
helped India to a lead of 138.
In the second innings, West Indies put up a better performance but a
target of 124 always looked achievable. India romped home with seven
wickets in hand thanks to another fine half-century by Gavaskar.
The remaining tests proved to be run-feasts as India held on to the lead
to clinch the series 1-0. The series witnessed the emergence of Sunil
Gavaskar and India's famed spin quartet.
