Established in 1982, Sardar Patel Stadium at Motera, Ahmedabad, staged its first Test match in 1983, when India played against West Indies. Spread over an area of 50 acres of land, the ground was completed in a record nine months, to be ready on time for the first series played there. Sardar Patel stadium, Motera, is owned by Gujarat Cricket Association and named after India's first Home Minister - Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. A trench has been built around the playing area for the security of the players. Apart from cricket, the ground has played host to a number of programs arranged by the state Government of Gujarat. The stadium is situated on the outskirts of Ahmedabad. The stadium comes under the aegis of the West Zone. It is commonly known as Motera. It has an official capacity of 48,000 spectators and is equipped with floodlights for day-and-night games.
