Thanjavur is a prominent city in South India, known for classical music, art, and painting. Renowned as the "Rice Bowl of Tamil Nadu", Thanjavur houses the Brihadeeswara Temple, one of the UNESCO World Heritage Monuments. While the Thanjavur municipality spans over 36 square kilometers, the township and its exterior suburbs stretch up to 100 square kilometers. With an elevation of 57 meters above sea level, the city lies in the deltaic region of the Kaveri basin, crisscrossed by several networks of irrigation canals, about 56 kilometers from Tiruchirapalli and 320 kilometers from the capital Chennai. Being one of the oldest cities in India, Thanjavur was once the royal city of the Cholas, Nayaks, and Mahrattas. It was during the Cholas that this city gained prominence, and the great Brihadeeswara Temple.

Thanjavur enjoys a pleasant and moderate climate throughout the year. However, the summers are quite sunny and sweaty which are followed by cool rainfalls, bringing down the temperature and giving a huge relief. Come December and winters begin which makes it the most convenient time to visit Thanjavur. Hence, the most ideal months to pay a visit to this rich cultured city are between October and March. The specialized paintings and bronze statues are the most prominent art and crafts form from the ancient times. And with a significant contribution to Carnatic music, it has produced several classical musicians and Bharathanatyam dancers. The Tanjore paintings are known all over the world for the exceptionally distinct use of glass, metals and other materials for their creation.

If there's anything that symbolizes Thanjavur the best, it is the magnificent Brihadeeswara Temple built by Emperor Rajaraja Chola I around 1010 AD. Also known as the Big Temple, this spiritual heritage site was once of the finest contributions to Dravidian temple architecture. If it an ancient landmark in Thanjavur, the Tamil University is the modern counterpart with marvelous temple-like facade and a spectacular library housed in a circular building. One of the most popular centers of learning, fine arts, music, culture, and architecture in India, there are numerous tourist attractions, ancient sites, historical palaces, and glorious temples to visit, depicting the rich and vibrant culture of the city. Some of them include Saraswathi Mahal Library, Manora Fort, Royal Museum, Navagraha Temple, Thanjavur Palace, Vijayanagara Fort, The Akshayapureeswarar Temple, Nandi Bull, Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Schwartz Church, Sacred Heart Cathedral, Tholkappiyar Sadukkam, and Rajagopala Beerangi.
